Each muscle burned for release, ached to be utilized to their full potential. The elk were skittish and highly strung, but Halifax was certain he had this one cornered and caught unaware. Nature was on his side as it sent a playful breeze in his direction, momentarily veiling his alarming scent. He moved with painful precision, each placement of his paw was considered with grave importance. Bringing down such prey on his own was not going to be easy, but there was nobody else around and he had singled out a particularly weak-looking beast. Besides, a golden opportunity like this did not come very often, and Halifax was adamant that he would not lose it.
It would be odd not having to hunt for himself, as it was something he had done his whole life, and rather enjoyed. He didn't think he could help himself though if one simply fell into his grasp as this one seemed to have. And besides, he was sure Seyl could use an occasional helping hand in bringing down larger prey. Halifax knew from experience that it was certainly not an easy task, more easily done with a whole pack involved. Still, there was a chance that the huntress would not want his help. In that case, he would just have to forfeit his desire to hunt. He probably could, with time. It would make him very uncomfortable though, chowing down the fruit of somebody else's labor... It just didn't seem fair.
Finally believing he was close enough to make the fatal lunge, he coiled his muscles, bunching his hind legs beneath his body in readiness. Then, at the worst possible moment, his stomach growled audibly, causing his prey to snap its head up in alert. It was a stage that was not meant to occur until he had actually begun his killing leap. Praying it wasn't too late, he released his restrained muscles like a spring, aiming for the elk's pulsing throat. Large paws tried to wrestle the animal down, jaws clamping tight on whatever they could get a hold of. The timing was mere heartbeats too late and the animal sprung away from its executioner lithely, save but a mouthful of hair. Halifax spat the tasteless crap from his mouth, the sound of fleeing hooves mocking his failure. He watched the animal bound away with a sigh, pondering over the irony of his very hunger being the reason for its lack of fulfillment.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
There was sense of duty about the weighted alphess at all times now, as she slunk through the forest, digging deep within her mind for more ideas to defend Sousepack against the coming drought. She was very worried, indeed, for all three enemy Packs - especially Valepack, the earth-laden ones - would be trying to retrieve the prey that all scurried toward Souselands waters. Right now, Nara was searching for thorn bushes, acorns, anything that might give physical pain to those who dared cross the borders.
As she wandered through her lands, her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden crashing through brush and bracken. Her ears pricked up and she was instantly extremely aware of her surroundings. The beats upon the ground were too far apart to be a wolf's, or any other furred animal. It was more like leaps, or bounds, that hit the ground. Hooves? Nara became super-alert, claws unconsciously sliding out and teeth becoming bared. It was coming right for her... a caribou.
Golden eyes gaining a wild glint as she realized this was a caribou, and could feed at least 3 full-grown wolves, she knew she needed to down it, while keeping it relatively intact. This was a hard feat to accomplish, even by an alpha. Heaving a deep sigh, she bristled, and readied herself. The green leaves in front of her rustled, and antlers protruded. In a flash, the entire caribou was out of the brush, its eyes wild with fright and panic. Her own orbs narrowed, and she calculated exactly where and when to pounce.
And she did. Her claws scrambled futilely against the caribou, and the very back of her mind noted how there was a patch missing in it's short fur - another wolf had gotten to it first - as her teeth locked at the bottom of the large beast's neck. Nara knew this would not slow it down easily, but it would, indeed, slow it down, if she had the strength to hold on. Scrambling to gain a better hold, and successfully placing herself upon the deer relative's wide back, she clung to it's neck desperately, knowing that this could, indeed, be a life or death situation.

Sauntering into the nearby brush to take refuge from the unrelenting sun, Halifax yawned. He had seen no sign of his pack members, and somehow thought this a relatively good hand of fortune. Although, he had not seen Nara since the gathering and found himself worrying for her well-being. She seemed greatly upset by the whole Dragula incident, and had not appeared to want any company since. Frowning, he wondered if he should look for her. Would she want to be found? Deciding he had nothing else productive to do, he hauled himself up from under the shady trees and trotted over to where he had been hunting.
Halifax had been surprised to find the female's intoxicating scent so soon, and after following it for a few minutes, he was even more surprised to discover the tantalizing smell of his failed meal clash with Nara's. Brow drawing together, he followed the duet of smells. Perhaps the Alpha had happened upon the fleeing herbivore and was tracking it just as he was tracking her. Falling into an easy trot, he continued on the weaving path. Suddenly an almighty crash ahead caused Halifax to leap into a run, abandoning the scent trail, he followed his ears. There was a series of bellows and throaty snarls, then a second crash.
The sight was so bizarre that Halifax had to do a double-take, skidding to a halt at the edge of the small clearing. "Nara?" he called over the sound of the distressed beast upon which she was perched, jaws clamped tightly around the poor creatures nape. Unable to reach the caribou's jugular from where she was, Nara seemed to be relying on her weight alone to bring the animal down. Unable to handle the petrified mammal's suffering anymore, Halifax stepped in to lend a helping hand. Going for the killing strike for a second time - on the same animal - he ensured he would not miss this time.
The caribou had a surprising amount of strength left as it writhed and twisted in Halifax's unrelenting grip. Slowly though, it dropped to the ground, first to its weakening knees, and then with a last grunt, it collapsed entirely. "Interesting tact," he said once he released his death grip on the caribou's throat, licking the hot blood from his lips. "admirable, really." His voice came quietly, a little unsure. This was the first time he had spoken to her alone in some time, and a lot had taken place since then. He wondered if she would request his departure. Forgetting the befallen prey, he took a few steps away, ready to leave his Alpha be, should she ask it.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
She knew the interesting male was near her before she could see him, his beautiful scent wafting against her tender nostrils, less distinct than the caribou's, but distinct nonetheless. She was growing weaker, and faster than the large, wild beast. Her claws scrambled against it's short fur futilely, and as she saw Halifax's tan-white fur flash within her sight, she dug her fangs out from the bottom of the caribou's neck and plopped ungracefully to the forest floor below. Her sides were heaving gasps as she caught her breath, and her milky golden gaze watched intensely as the new Sousepack recruit brought the tired prey down, finally.
Heaving herself to an upright position, she perked her ears as the mouthwatering scent of warm, fresh blood hit her, and the sight of the muscular new warrior. She listened intently as he spoke to her, at long last. It seemed he had never actually conversed with her, never having much to say. The very back of her mind pricked with ease as she finally got what she had been unconsciously wishing for - a chance to get to know this striking brute. A smile lit her features, making Nara seem more like a friend and less like an alpha. "Interesting it may be, but it's more so unorthodox, dear Halifax," she barked, the small laughter making her ribs shake and burn with the pain of using so much air so soon after she had regained it. Wincing ever so slightly, she lowered her beautiful off-white head to the ground and gazed up sincerely upon his features, his face. "Thank you." Her voice was soft and gentle with the meaning of her words, eyes dancing with happiness as she realized that the cappuccino and cream-colored tom had possibly saved her life, as the situation could've easily gotten that serious.
The sun was suddenly unbearable upon Nara's back, which was, indeed, not camouflage. Letting her tongue loll out like a pup, she pranced over to a nearby bush. It was small, but, flopping down upon her side and curling her feet and tail over her smooth body, it shaded her entire body. Gazing at Halifax, trying to catch his amber gaze, Nara's voice was suddenly pleading, realizing that he was, probably, not comfortable within her presence or her territories as of yet. "Please don't go, Hal... I'd love company." Just as easily as she had discovered the less-hostile 'Drag' from Dragula, she spoke the nickname 'Hal' from Halifax without thinking twice on it.

Deciding that the female's tone of voice was not guarded nor cold, Halifax allowed himself to relax ever so slightly, his tail dropping neutrally between his hocks rather than tucked over his groin as it had been before. He wet his nose with his tongue and took a few careful steps closer to where Nara had placed herself. Her thanks made him very uncomfortable, and he did not what to say in response. Nobody had ever really thanked him for anything - except maybe Isobelle, when he thought about it. In his eyes, he had done nothing but take down the prey she had obviously worked so hard to disarm. Surely bringing down a beast of that size single-handedly would be cause for a sense of triumph and self achievement. All Hal had done was taken that final, victorious punch from Nara. He was certain that, left to her own devices, she could have finished the caribou off herself. He just.. could not stand around as the poor creature's life slowly and painfully drained away.
Halifax tried to remain neutral in the face of his Alpha, but inwardly he fluttered with joy at Nara's willingness to accept company, whether it was just her trouble-making newcomer or not. The fact that she was not rejecting conversation with her pack members made Halifax want to sigh with relief. He had began to work himself into quite the fret. Stupid really, now that he thought about it."If that's what you want, then I'm not going anywhere." he murmured, his deep voice - though quiet - carrying easily across the short distance. Deciding he would give Nara her space, he sat where he was, not bothering to seek shade. The sun felt as though its scorching rays would singe the very hairs of his back, yes, but still he sat, tolerating it in trade for something he thought far more valuable - Nara's comfort.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
This Halifax was handsome. Respectful, cautious, protective. Not many wolves Nara met nowadays were so easy to trust, as she felt her own trust wavering and growing within this tan-tinted male. Letting out an exhausted sigh, the cream-furred alphess dragged her feet out from under her and pushed herself to a more comfortable position, where should could easily, and comfortably, rest her dainty head upon her large, slightly bloody paws. Her milky golden hues stayed rested upon her company's own bright amber orbs, and slight smile touched her outlined gray lips, curving the edges upward warmly.
His words caused strange flutterings within her belly, and even her blue veins, something she had never experienced before. They made her feel giddy, even safe around Halifax. Her stomach seemed to squeeze with the warm, massaging pressure of this new feeling. She could almost feel her gentle gaze start sparkling as she embraced this, not yet knowing what it meant. "Are you happy here, Halifax?" she asked suddenly, her voice quiet. The question was deep, meaningful - she wanted him to be happy, whether or not it meant she would lose her newest and possibly strongest warrior yet. She felt as if this handsome brute deserved to be happy... almost over the Pack's needs.
Nara's golden eyes widened suddenly at this thought, and she flicked her ear unconsciously. She would never think that again, she couldn't - not as an alpha. But... she didn't feel like an alpha right now. Glancing up at Halifax once more, taking his respectable distance and his well-built figure in, she felt like a simple hunter, like she had been before. It was a good feeling... his presence lifted the weight off her shoulders like no other presence had before, not even Drag's. A sharp pang snapped at her mind, warning her not to think of that coal-black maned wolf. Out-of-bounds... she needed to stay happy, and not lose herself like she had when he had disobeyed her.
No... it would be easy to forget about Dragula around this calm creature. The half smile that was still plastered on Nara's face transformed into a wolfish grin, charming yet bashful.

Halifax yawned as he lowered himself into a laying position, his eyes becoming almost level with Nara's. He marveled at the warm colour of them, appearing to be made solely of liquid gold. He had never seen such astonishing beauty in something as simply as an eye. Little did he know that he looked through something of similar appearance each and every day of his life. Never much liking what he saw there, Halifax had never really pondered over his own reflection, and so was mostly unaware of the features on his face.
The smell of the carcass behind him was tantalizingly delicious, yet he had no desire to break eye contact with the placid female in order to taste it for himself. He watched an array of emotions flit through Nara's eyes, fascinated by her reaction to his seemingly simple response. He observed the abrupt halt of her flow of thought as a single question obtained priority over her mind, ears becoming rigid with the sudden anticipation of her query. "Are you happy?" was all she asked, her voice not giving away too much of the thoughts behind it, but enough to let the Warrior know that it meant a lot to her. Halifax hated to think of himself as a Warrior, hated to think that others were addressing him by this title. By all personal standards, he was no where near fit for the rank he had been born to fill - but could not.
His personal standards were incredibly high though. Actually he was rather a brilliant warrior when it came to comparison of the average pack fighter. Combined with his impeccable lineage and initial training, he would most certainly be an asset to any average pack. However, his own personal desires strayed far from the want to fight, to maim, to kill. Though using his body is such a fashion felt somewhat comfortable and familiar, he tended toward a more peaceful path, the path he walked as a nomad. He had to wonder what oncoming threats might force him into the persona he was born to be, might force him to make a kill under the name of protection and honor. He reeled from the thought. It would not be an enjoyable event, that was for absolute certain. Nonetheless, it felt as though it was becoming inevitable.
Shaking off the ominous thoughts, he tried to untie the knot that was forming between his brow. "I have been here just a few days, so I cannot be sure." he said honestly, his voice still maintaining only an intimate amount of volume. "Happiness isn't always something that comes... Naturally - to me." He sighed, then added a small smile, trying to take a little of the dampness off of his depressing words. He did not want to burden the Alpha with his sob stories - as much as she seemed to have stepped out of her enormous Alpha shoes for the moment. He could not help but chuckle at Nara's youthful grin, it stirred something deep down within him that seemed to make being a Warrior the best thing in the world if it could only make her life just that little bit easier.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
His truth... it was quite saddening, really. Nara's cream-colored ears dropped just the faintest. Of course, it was too soon to tell if this dirty snow pelted brute could truly be happy here. But oh!, she had wished it badly. Why, she did not know. She did know, though, that his happiness would mean the world to her, as if all things were no longer threatening compared to a smile from his solemn maw, even though she had yet to see one. Nara's golden eyes widened in surprise as she heard an unusual, rough and scratchy sound omit from Halifax. Her ivory brow furrowed as she tried to understand it. It was almost as if he was... giggling? That must be it, for as he did so, his voice seemed to be more unused than his regular vocals. But, depressingly, even a hint of a wolfish grin still did not trace itself on his jaws as he chuckled at her pup-like attitude.
"Why must you be so serious, dear Halifax? Right now, you are not a warrior to me, but a friend... if you'd like. Relax!" she yipped suddenly, nipping his flank ever so slightly, her eyes dancing with warmth and desire. Desire for what? Maybe a male would be able to tell, but she had no idea in the lands of Darayn how so she was attracted to him. She wanted to know this muscular, handsome, and seemingly caring tom for his soft side. What had he been like as a pup? Always looking on, never jumping on the leaves, or snow, or even a frog? She wanted him to show some spark of life, actual living life, for once, for that happiness to dance crazily in his eyes, lighting them up. If only she could force one to be happy with her alpha traits.
She flicked her ear chidingly upon herself. She would not think like a ruler now, no. She would get to know this wolf as he was, and be as she was... a normal wolf, even if she did have extremely not normal duties. They could burden even Aetherpack with the seriousness of some of the things she had to deal with. She flashed that beautiful, charming grin of hers once more as she waited for Halifax's reply.

Halifax cocked his head at the sad, distraught look Nara was giving him. It seemed as though she was contemplating something, something that caused a small frown to appear between her beautiful eyes. Why did she seem to care so deeply about him? What was he to her? What on earth did she see in him that upset her so at his unhappiness? Halifax frowned too as he tried so hard to understand, to put himself in her shoes. The words that vocalized from Nara's lips made the Warrior's mouth pop open just slightly. His brows shot up, his face an image of pure surprise. "Why must you be so serious, dear Halifax? Right now, you are not a warrior to me, but a friend... if you'd like. Relax!" Was he not relaxed? He did a quick evaluation of the rigid muscles in his body, his alert, ever-attentive ears, and eyes that missed nothing. Perhaps he was not quite relaxed. But how could he be? He was in company of the Alpha, one who had her fair share and stress and duty. The last thing she needed was a lazy Warrior taking up her time.
Without his conscious say-so, the male's ears flattened at Nara's playful nip. He observed the need for affection in her deep, honey-gold eyes. The desire to do something unorthodox and carefree. Halifax raised his thick next until it became a dominant crest, his chest puffing out just a little. A deep rumble sounded from the pit of his stomach, a sound of warning. "Watch it, Nara." He growled, eyes narrowed. "I don't think you quite know what you have brought upon yourself, here." He said, now up on all four legs. He did a slow circle around the female in very much a hunter-like manner. As he came around to face her, he stopped. For a moment, he just held her gaze, a hint of desire flitting past his own golden eyes. Slowly he approached her, ensuring nothing about him gave her any kind of insight as to what was going on. He did not stop until his face was next to hers, his mouth at her ear. "Let us see how quick our Alpha really is." Suddenly he sprung away from her, a playful yip escaping his lips, surprising him more than anyone.
As he bounded off into the nearby bush, knowing exactly where he wanted to end up, he had to do a double-take. Who the bloody hell was that? Halifax had never seen - much less performed - such a ridiculous display in his life. Would she think him disrespectful because of it? Had he done it wrong? As his long, powerful legs carried him swiftly through the maze of undergrowth, he slowed, wondering if she would even want to follow. What if she thought he had been serious? His stomach rolled at the thought. Why had he decided to play this silly game - with the Alpha of all wolves! ... Because he could not handle that longing, that deep yearning in her eyes. Could not handle to see it crushed by his unwillingness to participate. Though he had rough-housed with his siblings as a pup, he remembered this game more thoroughly as it was one he had played with his sister even as they grew older.
