The willows cried. Soul liked to think that they cried for her. For her family, for her sanity . . . for Ember. And why, do tell me, would they cry because of me? the voice hissed through Soul's mind and she shuddered. That voice . . . it haunted her. It never left her alone. Ember never left her alone.
To this day, Soul didn't know where Ember came from or why she came. Ember insisted that her purpose was to teach Soul to be strong, but Soul didn't understand that. Why did she need to be strong? Sure, before she had lived with her family who were nomads, but she was part of a pack now. She was swift and graceful on her feet: a wonderful hunter. Why hadn't Ember gone away?
Ember had killed her family. Her parents, her siblings, they were all dead. Ember had absolutely slaughtered them and then told Soul that she was going to learn to be independent, and that she would take care of her. Soul had tried to kill herself. Ember wouldn't let her. Ember would take over her body and eat for her or prevent her from intentionally hurting herself.
Now, as she sat beneath the weeping trees, she felt like weeping herself. She had lost so much at her own paws. Even though she and Ember were not the same wolf, they shared a body. Soul would have to go through life knowing that her very own jaws had snapped her brother's throat. He had been her best friend. Now he was dead.
But she wouldn't lose anymore, not because of Ember. She could suppress the vicious beast, Ember said herself that she could be strong. And she would. Soul had been making a life in Sousepack, and she would stay. For sure. There was no way she would let Ember hurt anyone else.
The determination was not present in Soul's amber eyes. She kept her expressions guarded--no one knew about the presence that shared her mind. Soul couldn't allow them to find out. Maybe when Ember went away she would tell them, but for now the gray and white she-wolf was happy keeping Ember a secret.
Soul wasn't crazy, she wouldn't let anyone think that she was.
FOR;; anyone! NOTES;; sorry! it's a little crappy.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
My nightly rounds always started in Kolenya and ended in Sokanon. I had found absolutely nothing worth my time or interest, so I expected nothing here. My magnificent, gentle amber eyes skimmed over absolutely nothing though, and I was quick to notice the scent of another. After a momentary pause where I bristled in defense and uncertainty, I quickly sighed as I recognized the stranger's scent to be of my own - a Sousewolf, I was sure of that. The reassurance brought back my superior mind, and I padded forward confidently into the shelter of the calm willows.
I was willing to greet the member of mine own Pack, but her defeated stance made me double back to perceive my actions. Yes, I was going to see what she was up to, that was for sure. And a smart plan would probably be to figure out if I knew the young she-wolf. At least, she looked young. But the way her head hung gracefully from her shoulders, the way her eyes were so dull, made me wonder if her mind was not old beyond her years.
Sinking quietly to my paws, I coordinated myself into a stance of friendliness. Slinking forward, I pricked my ears and held my tail high, a sign of my status within our Pack. I held my eyes upon her frail figure, and all of a sudden, it all came to me. I stood upright quickly, knowing I had to be witty and cautious around the troubled Hunter. Her name was Soul...most of the time. I knew she had another side to her. I didn't know how, nor why, but I accepted her as she was. Soul was quiet, loyal, gentle, usually; but sometimes her eyes would take on this hardened, haunted look, and she would lash out, even at me.
Taking in the way she was sitting, quite sorrowfully, under the equally sorrowful trees, I considered it safe to approach. The other side of her - Ember was her name - would usually be much more aware. "Soul?" I murmured, my tones gentle and prodding.

siyl
Not many knew the terrain's secrets. Land was just not land, nor territory to be owned or traded. Land was a river with knowledge as its water. Land was her lover, her own pleasure-bringer. A drug of sorts, some could call it. Distinct, different than anything else. It opened a gateway and let the new thoughts enter, their novelty intoxicating. Land had its own secrets, its own knowledge...and she would pry it out if she had to. Sokanon was the place she remembered most by its weeping willow trees. Their flimsy branches, the lanky leaves, a disgrace if one was to compare it with other trees. Perhaps being a disgrace was why the willows decided to stand there and sob, its teardrops being the stringy leaves draping over the ground. But besides that, Sokanon was a fairly decent place. Short grass hued a fresh shade of green and there was a slight humidity in the air from the nearby rivers. The smell of urine dominated the fragrances in the air, a pungent reminder that Nara was alpha and Siyl was simply a hunter. The area was rather undoubtedly quiet as well, nothing but the twitters of birds and rustles of plants moved by wind. Siyl stood stiffly within Sokanon, her sinewy muscles definite in the half-sitting, half-standing pose. The tip of her tail quivered, and her gold eyes twinkled with a new kind of giddy. Siyl smiled to herself, revealing a glimpse of her teeth, because deep in her mind she registered that today she would have company. Weeping willow trees, although a disgrace to the plant life, proved to be effective shelters. Her rust-colored figure was obscured by the dark trunk and cascading leaves. But on the other side, her view was obscured as well- yet she didn't need to see much to know there was another wolf near. A distance away situated a wolf under a different weeping willow, but obviously not trying to hide. With head tilted downward, it stared at its paws. The wolf was a rather ordinary gray, the colors meshing into lighter creams on the underside- average coloring for one of its species. Siyl immediately noticed the wolf's small stature, already looking like it was full-grown yet still rather pathetic. Siyl inched away quietly from the safety of the willow tree to catch a better glimpse. It was risky, yes, but she wanted to know who the wolf was. She lowered her head and for once, her view was clear- no bothersome leaves hanging in front of her face. The wolf she recognized as Soul, a scrawny lupine Siyl was only acquainted with. Soul was, if she wasn't mistaken, a female hunter like herself. Although, from size and mopey demeanor, probably not competent for the role. Siyl watched Soul briefly, finding it hard to imagine Soul was oblivious to her presence. It was just another example of incompetence. How could a wolf do that? Siyl pondered. If only she was Alpha- wolves like Soul would be exiled from her pack, it wasn't like they could help. Ranting was doing nothing, however, to help Soul's situation, and bored Siyl flickered her attention back to the rest of the landscape after scooting back into the safety of her willow tree. She sighted another wolf. The wolf was white, an uncanny color in contract to spring's pastel blues, yellows, and greens. Its fur held a silky sheen, something that Siyl would long to possess. The alpha, Siyl recognized. Nara, the alpha of Sousepack. Similarly to Soul, Siyl was acquainted with Nara, but not familiar. Nara's fur bristled with dominance- her tail raised high, ears pricked, eyes intently staring. Was there a loner in Sokanon? She watched Nara edge closer toward where Soul sat. Hah, an Alpha scared of a subordinate in her own pack, Siyl laughed to herself as she realized what was happening. Nara's caution became more obvious as she murmured warily to Soul, as if Soul was going to attack. Siyl contemplated if it would be worth it to show herself. To prance over and fake emotion on her features, to pretend to actually care. I'll wait, Siyl decided. No need to rush. WORDS; 684 NOTES; I've decided Siyl won't know of Soul's other personality (Ember) yet. To add some fun to the thread, she'll find out. ^^

“Soul?” the gentle tones shocked Soul out of her thoughts and she jumped around, drawing back her lips to bare her teeth into a snarl. Not that she was particularly frightening. Between her small height and slender build, she was hardly fearsome. As soon as she set her guarded amber eyes on the other wolf, she lowered her head in respect. Shoot. The alpha of her new pack. Nara had welcomed her kindly into Sousepack, the least she could do was keep herself in check, right?
Soul coughed awkwardly and then looked up. “Sorry,” she whispered quietly. “I should’ve been paying more attention.” Yes, you should’ve, hissed Ember. Kill her, she sent the thought through Soul’s mind. Kill her and take leadership of the pack. Soul gulped unnoticeably and blinked a few times, willing the wolf in her head to disappear.
That wasn’t possible. Ember was there to stay, it seemed, though Soul still hooped. She was allowed to do that much, was she not? Soul sat again and looked away from Nara. She refused to think much of her Alpha. Ember couldn’t know how much she actually did like Sousepack--that would only drive her to destroy them quicker, before Soul had the chance to stop her.
Idiot, Ember hissed, you two aren’t the only ones here. Focus! Soul frowned.
Stop trying to distract me, she thought.
Ember huffed impatiently. When will you learn? she asked. I’m here to protect you, I wouldn’t lie about this.
Yeah? Soul scoffed. You did a damn good job of protecting me so far. Y’know, killing my family and all.
Ember did have a point, however, Ember went out of her way to keep Soul from harming herself. It was because of this, and only this, that she paused and sniffed a bit. Yup, Ember was right. Of course I was. Soul ignored her, but frowned again. It smelled like Sousepack, but not an exact scent she remembered. Ember huffed again. You don’t learn quickly, she observed. It’s Siyl.
Siyl? Ah, yes, Soul remembered her. Friendly seeming, but a little . . . Weird. Of course, Soul shouldn’t talk about ‘weird.’ She heard a voice in her head. That was about as weird as weird got.
Then again, at least there weren’t multiple voices.
Nara hasn’t noticed Siyl, Ember pointed out, and Soul tilted her head a bit. That was true. “Nara,” she said in her usual quiet tone. “We’re not alone.” Soul nodded her gray and white head towards the direction that Siyl’s scent was coming from, but still wouldn’t meet Nara’s eyes.

Even in madness, I know you still believe
I had noticed right off the bat that the two-toned female and I were not alone. My mane bristling just slightly just once more, my amber eyes darted quickly towards the third addition to our company, and relaxed immediately. Siyl was a feisty thing at that, but she was Pack family nonetheless. I knew the scene of myself approaching Soul, seemingly nervous or in a position lower than I am currently placed, would have given the onlooker a smug idea that I was weaker than I let on. But I was not. Twitching my tail just the faintest to let Siyl know she had not been missed, I focused attention once more on Soul, who was before me.
She had let her guard down. Of course, she was not required to be alert at all times, as my warriors were, but it was a necessity of our species - to be able to note every leaf floating to the ground below our feet, every twig that snapped ever so slightly under a squirrel's puny weight. But could I really blame her? Sokanon had an essence about it, and an essence that I loved entirely at that. Without duties such as mine, it would be easy to nod off into my toiling thoughts, such as Soul seemed to have done. But the brethren's guilty eyes gentled me, and I curled my regal tail comfortably around my paws. "There is no need to fret over a matter so small, Soul." I was indeed sure this was Soul, for her shifting glances and uncertain posture was certainly not that of Ember, whom was ferocious and assertive. I had always to be careful and royal around that side of the wolf, but never Soul. Soul was a gentle being, no matter what mysteries haunted her from the past.
I had almost no anger within my compassionate being, but the little that I did have sparked up at Soul's next words. Of course, they meant nothing, just informing me that we had a visitor. But the fact that she thought I would oversee that? No. But gladly, my temper was very short-lived. I would be surprised if even a flash had occurred within my eyes. Flicking my elegant ears backward ever so slightly, I finally turned my head, and thus my attention, towards Siyl. "'Evening, Siyl." My words invited the femme into my presence just as surely as an equine's tail would have stung a fly off their haunches. I waited patiently for Siyl to join Soul and me, the breeze that was blowing through the sorrowful vines soothing my spirit.

siyl Much to her delight, the scene of Soul and Nara meeting decided to unfold in front of her own eyes. Siyl didn't have to think, to make sure the disgust of it all didn't show on her features. From the safety and concealment of the weeping willow tree, she could witness it all from a third-person view. What an opportunity to see the pitiful Soul socialize for once, to creep out of her little shell and /talk/. It was an improvement for the timid wolf, no matter how mild. But to see Nara in action, to see how she would treat a subordinate, was more of an opportunity. Was Nara the one to be kind, or cruel? Sensitive, or callous? Siyl licked her lips. She could learn so much from such a simple encounter. At the sound of her name being called, Soul jerked her head up and her eyes flashed with bestiality. Exposing her teeth, she uttered a slew of guttural noises from the back of her throat. It surprised Siyl to know such a tiny, fragile creature was able of growling so fiercely, but then again, Soul had to have some way of intimidating others. Siyl wagged her tail in delight. Oh yes, she was brilliant for picking such a spot to observe. What was even more brilliant was her luck- instead of against her as usual, it seemed to be in her odds. Soul regained her composure quickly, the beast in her eyes suffocated by the meekness of her regular demeanor. She muttered a sorry, her voice filled with shame and perhaps even fear, and then she turned her head away. Siyl expected Nara to do something. Perhaps have her swipe a paw at Soul as a warning to contain herself, or perhaps to reprimand the wolf verbally. But Nara did none of those except cast a glance teeming with pity at the small wolf and reminding her that it was alright. Alright? Siyl thought, shaking her head. Sousepack was in dire need of repair. Maybe one day she could provide the repairs it needed. Siyl's dreams were pushed to the back of her mind though as she focused more intently on the scene. Soul opened her mouth, and moved it as if she was speaking, but Siyl heard nothing. The stupid wolf couldn't even speak loud enough for her to hear. She bit her lip in frustration and strained to listen, but caught no sound. Flickering her gaze to Nara, Siyl hoped her movements and reply would give her some clue of what Soul said. But even if it didn't, Soul probably said nothing worthwhile. After all, what dire secrets were there to talk about? There was a moment of silence that left Siyl analyzing Nara's movement, but to no avail...until the clear voice of Nara rang. Siyl resisted the urge to jump as the slow syllables of her name passed through her ears... She had been spotted. Siyl kept her head at its normal position, knowing if she lowered it any, it would make her seem ashamed, and if she averted her eyes, she would seem like she was purposely doing that to avoid the calm stare of the alpha. Walking at a regular pace, she advanced towards Nara and Soul and stopped in front of them, then sat down. "Evening, Nara and Soul." She curtly bowed her head. "Sorry..." She paused for a moment, unsure of how to explain her behavior without wording it to make it sound blatantly obvious she was spying. "for not coming over here to converse as well. I was unsure of what to do- I didn't want to barge in on your conversation."The wording, Siyl quickly realized, was not completely innocent, even to her own ears. Yet, it was suitable, and if she quickly averted the subject then the moment would be completely forgotten. "It's great to see everyone in Sousepack meeting here. How are you doing, Nara?"Siyl deliberately turned to Soul as well, to ask her a question. Although she still viewed Soul as rather useless, in front of her and the alpha, it would be best not to let on to it. "It's great to see you too, Soul. Looking rather glum however, is there anything wrong?"She plastered the near perfect look of mild concern on her features, a look of "is everything alright?". WORD COUNT: 710 NOTES: Don't worry about it, Nova. ^^

Soul was the worrier of the two parts of her mind. Ember was the outgoing, strong-minded one. There was very little that could stop her once she had set her mind to something. It could be frightening when you saw it, and those who saw it had never lived to tell anyone else of the terror.
"There is no need to fret over a matter so small, Soul," Nova was trying to be comforting, that much was obvious, but it wasn't working very well. Or maybe Soul was intentionally trying to push away any calm that might come to her. Ember claimed that she was there to protect Soul, if she could learn to pay attention and care for herself, Ember might go away. Was that too much to hope for?
Soul shuffled her front paws awkwardly and then looked up with a small smile on her face. "I know," she lied. Ember growled impatiently at Soul's lack of assertiveness. How far do you honestly think you're gonna get this way, Soul? she snarled. Soul flinched back a bit. That's right: nowhere. The cruel truth of the words hit Soul hard, but she just ignored them. Ember would see. One day there would be no more reason for her to stay in Soul's mind and she would have no choice but to leave.
I highly doubt that.
When Soul pointed out (thanks to Ember's observation) that they weren't alone, Nova hesitated a moment and then turned towards the other wolf. "Evening, Siyl," she said. Soul felt her heart soar, in fact it was like some weight was taken off her. She had just helped her pack leader! Because of me, with that dry statement from Ember, everything returned to normal. Ember was right, Soul hadn't really done anything, Ember had.
Siyl slowly made her way over to Soul, Ember and Nova. "Evening, Nara and Soul," she said bowing her head a bit. Soul inclined her head in return. Stop it! snarled Ember. She's nothing! Don't show her any signs of being submissive! "Sorry . . ." Siyl trailed off and Soul tilted her head a bit in confusion. "For not coming over here to converse as well. I was unsure of what to do--I didn't want to barge in on your conversation." That made sense. Soul wouldn't want to come and just jump into someone else's conversation either.
"It's great to see everyone in Sousepack meeting here. How are you doing, Nara?" It was a polite question, though kind of pointless. In Soul's eyes, Nara was doing fine, at everything. She was a strong, fierce leader and always seemed to be collected. The exact opposite of Soul, in other words.
"It's great to see you too, Soul," Soul smiled at Siyl. Ember never really left her alone, but maybe she could ignore the vicious voice in her mind long enough to make an actual friend. Or course, there was always the problem of Ember trying to kill them. She had already murdered Soul's family, who was to say she would stop at that? "Looking rather glum however, is there anything wrong?"
"No," Soul spit out the word hastily, fear flashing through her eyes. Nobody could find out about Ember. "No, I'm good. And yourself?" Turning the conversation away from herself was the only thing she could think of doing.
