there's no place like STILLWATER
It was a popular spot for anybody looking for a good time. The fair-sized town fifty-four miles out in the wild, forty minutes to the nearest camping ground, had its charm. Those coming up to the cottage or lake would sit in the local coffee shop and chat with those they knew by now. Older couples drove up to look at the fine wares they sold. The flea market was connected to the grocery store in an old dirt lot. The stores all moved down a roll, then curled to make another street. A few meters from that curve was the lake, a brightly painted array of liquid everlasting. Since the town was surrounded by thick pine all season, the lake's surface barely moved. The name Stillwater was just.
Those that lived in the town celebrated good company, life without crimes and excellent business. For you see, the town was a major export of resources. Cattle, vegetation, coal, fruit, paper pulp, etc. It all came from Stillwater.
One day a new source of economic income came to the flourishing town in the middle of nowhere. The name was B-X Corp, a big business corporation privately owned. Over night a circular white building was placed out of the town limits, but near enough for it to loom overhead. The locals gathered nearby, having no warning of this sudden move. Two people came from the building, wearing identical white suits. They greeted and informed the people they produced animal food, quite safe for consumption and the environment. They wanted to get away from all the busy city life and come to a more quiet area. Also adding they where to have a charity ball for cancer research, the two people left the crowd satisfied and content with the new neighbors.
Months went by and nothing was amiss. A few kids noticed their cats went missing, but they usually did. Cats didn't last very long in the country, either eaten or run over. But having not found any bodies so far, people got suspicious and thought a nut was among them. The cats, however, where not getting killed. A little under a hundred of them where taken to be test subjects for B-X Corp.
Despite the company's claims of being for animal rights, it wasn't cheap to go that way. All ready was it costing the owner a pretty penny keeping the place running. Human subjects were not willing. Animals, well, who cared? They didn't speak. Just animals. And they could get accurate results by feeding it to the consumer.
What the scientists didn't count on was the off-chart addiction the food brought on. The cats refused to eat the food at first, but when they did they couldn't stop eating it. Even if it was bad for them. The food brought on severe seizures, vomiting, aggression and fur loss. Tests proved the cats knew the food was bad for them, but they still ate it.
Now that the cats outwore their welcome, B-X Corp dumped them to focus on the send set of subjects. But before they could even capture another group, the police were on their trail. For the hair loss of the contained animals grew back...quite oddly. Instead of ginger, tabby or calico; odd patterns and colors came. The cats couldn't look like they wandered off now.
B-X Corp was charged criminally and banned from Stillwater and its cat population. Months after the investigation and trial ceased, residents began to voice opinions about the situation. The town faced media coverage so severe they could loose business, export contracts and population. To preserve their way of life, the mayor set out on a crusade to rid the people of such a situation ever taking place in Stillwater; removing the test subjects.
Spreading a rumor that these cats, once loved and pampered by society, where now contagious with some incurable disease; owners gladly threw their pets on the streets. Strays were captured and sent to the pound. Those that escaped the fates crawled to their own kind for help. At first the normal cats welcomed them, but then the tales hit them as well. Some even resorted to violence in order to drive the infected, which they are now so affectionately called, away from uncontaminated felines.
How far will the humans go to avoid the truth? And that whispered hush about a gang of cats...is that really true?
No secret is kept for long in Stillwater.
